La carnival de los foodies

I know many wonderful people and one of my favourite things to do together is to celebrate whatever occasion it may be with great food and wine. Last Saturday a bunch of us foodies gathered together for what would become a regular night of food celebration. Our household was chosen to host the first festivities and I was given the task to pick a theme for the night. I decided each guest would make a Spanish dish to share at La Carnival de los Foodies.

As guests arrived the house got filled with the aromas from different Spanish offerings. Glasses were re-filled over and over with luscious fruit and Sangria. Throughout the night the kitchen was buzzing with friends and conversations. It’s amazing to see people ditch the comfortable lounge and gravitate towards the cooking area. I even had to drop the ‘kitchen bitch’ attitude for the night and let everyone play in peace.

Somehow we found enough room to serve the abundance of food there was. Fresh Gazpacho was served with a dollop of avocado cream, followed by a unique ‘not so raw’ ceviche that came with a story of its own and a tomato avocado salsa. Then of course there was tapas: Spanish tortillas, patatas bravas with chorizo and alioli, two types of meatballs, almond and red pepper dip and green olives. We were getting seriously stuffed and after a few more jugs of Sangria my seafood paella finally took center stage. Respect to everyone making it to dessert and trying all three: lemon sorbet, cinnamon ice-cream and a very special crema catalana with fresh berries instead of burnt sugar. Is that it? Ok, may be another jug of Sangria.

Laughter never left the room. My loyal wooden table was full of distinct personalities and backgrounds with one important thing in common - passion for food. Before the night was over we picked our next hosts and started brainstorming the new theme. Japanese, rainbow colours, foods to eat with your hands? Whatever it is, bring it on.

Note: The food is important but what really makes the party is when the hostess sneaks away for a snooze and gets jumped on by a dozen of drunk friends as a result.

Mmmmm and to think I thought I was immune to jealousy while traveling the world. Not so. Now I’m hungry and want to turn back time to be there!
